Enabling school attendance for children in Beni, Eastern Congo –
become a school sponsor now!

An unimaginable tragedy for thousands of children is currently taking place in Beni, the provincial capital of the North Kivu region in the Congo, unnoticed by the world. So-called rebel groups systematically murder around the city. Innocent people who work their fields to make a living. Thousands have already been barbarically slaughtered. Fearing terrorism, more and more people are fleeing to the city of Beni, which is relatively safe due to the military presence. But that means a life of poverty for many.

Children are traumatized and feel left alone
It is hard to imagine how much suffering the children affected have already experienced in their short lives. Many saw their parents or one parent die. As a result of the flight from home to the city, many children feel uprooted and do not know what to do next. They long for contact with their peers and a regular daily routine. The class community gives them support. In addition to learning, school is an important part of the life of these children in order to bring a structure into everyday life and to ensure social contact with other children. School uniforms are compulsory in the Congo. As a result, there is no visual difference between children who had to flee their home and children who have always lived in Beni. For the victims of violence in Eastern Congo, this brings a little normalcy to everyday life and helps to reduce stigmatization. The big problem with this: a school uniform costs money. In addition, school fees are also due.

School attendance is often impossible without outside help
In many cases this is an insurmountable obstacle for refugee families. Many children have to drop out of school and try to earn money to support their own families. A school uniform and the school fees only cost 60 euros per year. With the equivalent of 5 euros a month you can enable a child to attend school and thereby not only contribute to their education, but also ensure that the children are given a safe environment during class. Regular exchange with children and adolescents of the same age helps the victims to cope better with the traumatic experiences and is therefore very important.
